The Central Museum has various halls that provide suitable surroundings for each type of event, from gatherings, a delicious meal or product presentation.
Utrecht is famous as the birthplace of architect and furniture designer Gerrit Rietveld, who lived and worked in Utrecht all his life. The name of Rietveld has become an international synonym for Dutch design and architecture.
In addition to the largest Rietveld collection in the world, the Central Museum also manages a rich and varied collection of art, divided into 5 categories: ancient art, modern art, design, fashion and city history. The ancient art collection includes highlights from works by Saenredam, Van Scorel and Utrecht Caravaggists such as Ter Brugghen and Van Honthorst. The modern art collection provides an extensive overview of Dutch visual art from the 20th century, with works by Van Doesburg, Van der Leck and the Magical Realists Koch, Willink en Moesman. The museum was founded in 1838 and is thus the oldest municipal museum in the Netherlands.
The Central Museum has various halls that provide suitable surroundings for each type of event, from gatherings, a delicious meal or product presentation. It is important for us to be able to reconcile requests with personal wishes at an early stage.
We do our utmost to help you decide on the creative crystallisation of your event. We are happy to brainstorm, but have to take into account that, in essence, we are a museum. Therefore we love to introduce visitors to our wonderful collection, whether by means of a guided tour or an art history mini workshop. This is the reason why we have made this a condition for an event in the Central Museum.
Currently, the Refter museum restaurant is located right where the refectory or dining hall of the original function of the museum, the Agnietenklooster convent, was located in the Middle Ages. It was designed by Richard Hutten and refers to that past in a contemporary manner.
