Since 2000, the appearance of the Utrecht town hall has changed entirely thank to architect Miralles(EMBT). Despite the fact that the town hall has expanded trough the centuries by purchasing adjacent houses, the compound façade at the Oudegracht has remained unchanged. At the Korte Minrebroederstraat side, however, a modern building has been erectedm of which the old frame elements against the new wing refer to the past. This used to be the main entrace in the neo-classical façade from 1821 at the stadhuisbrug: a 14th century square for the people which was realised by combining two bridges when the council and sheriffs established themselves in the three buildings on the corner. In 2001, this project was awarded the Rietveldprijs.
